I love when I walk into a restaurant and they have a wall covered in dollar bills. Those bills, and many times accompanying photos, Polaroids, etc. represent their first customers.

The first clients, customers, readers, they were there when it all started. That first follower is like a first kiss. Maybe I wouldn’t go that far, but the moment was exhilarating for me.

I want to keep them in my feed regardless if I’m interested in their topic for a few reasons.

  1. They saw something in my writing so we must have some kind of connection.
  2. The diverse subjects they’ll introduce me to are perfect for countering confirmation bias and the pigeonholing that comes from an algorithm serving me more of what I like. It’s a great way to find out about things I didn’t even know I would like.
  3. They are special to me and I want to know more about them and stay in touch with my “firsts”.

But for those who will be following me for a follow back, and then unfollowing me, I am going to be tracking your ass. I will unfollow you very soon if you use me like that.
